Frequently Asked Questions
Answers to Your Questions About Warrior Scholar Martial Arts Center
Kids Martial Arts
Q: “Do Martial Arts make kids violent?”
Not at all! Our kids martial arts classes in Lawrence are designed to teach peace, discipline, and self-control. Children learn how to avoid fights—not start them—by developing emotional regulation and respectful behavior.
Q: “ Is martial arts safe for kids?”
Yes—safety is our top priority. While all physical activity carries some risk, the injury rate in martial arts is very low thanks to proper supervision, structured drills, and our highly trained instructors. We maintain a controlled, positive environment to keep your child safe while they learn.
Q: “What if my child isn’t athletic or coordinated?”
That’s totally okay! Martial arts is perfect for kids of all skill levels. In fact, our classes are designed to help children become more flexible, balanced, and confident—whether they’re athletic or not. Many kids in Far Rockaway, Inwood, and Woodmere who start without much coordination see major improvement in just a few weeks.
Q: “Are martial arts classes actually fun for kids?”
YES! Our local kids karate classes blend high-energy drills, games, and teamwork-based exercises that keep students excited and engaged. It’s not only a great workout—it’s also a chance to make friends, set goals, and celebrate progress in a fun, supportive setting.
Q: “How old does my child need to be to start martial arts?”
We welcome students as young as 4 years old! Our beginner-friendly kids martial arts programs are tailored by age group so that each child can learn at their own pace. If you're in Lawrence, Cedarhurst, or Valley Stream, we’d love to help you find the perfect class for your child’s age and experience level.
Birthday Parties
Q: "Will my class be in a group or 1-on-1?"
Most likely you'll be in a group class. However we gladly offer private classes for those that are interested. Feel free to ask any of our instructors for more info on private classes!
Q: "How many people are in a group class?"
At peak times, there's between 15-30. Some times have more, some less. But we make sure to have enough instructors to match the class size. That way you always get the attention you need.
Q: "Are there other beginners in the classes?”
Yes, classes are full of people of all experience levels - including total beginners.
Q: "Are there women in the classes?"
Yes! While the majority of our BJJ students are men, there are women who come and have an awesome experience, too.
Q: "Do you offer any kind of help / guidance with nutrition and eating?”
We've researched deeply into nutrition to give all of our members powerful guidance - without making them start impossible-to-stick-to diets or anything of the sort.
Q: "Is this similar to 'cardio kickboxing'?”
No, our classes are extremely interactive, and involve real-life boxing equipment like punching bags & gloves. This is nothing like cardio kickboxing!
Adult Karate
Q: “Is it easy to get injured in adult karate classes?”
Not at all. At Warrior Scholar Martial Arts in Lawrence, we prioritize safety above everything. Our structured, low-impact adult classes are designed to improve flexibility, strength, and body awareness—so most people actually experience fewer injuries in daily life after training with us. We work at your pace and make sure every student feels confident and secure.

Nope! You’ll build strength, cardio, and flexibility as you go. Whether you’re just starting your fitness journey or already active, our adult karate classes are adaptable to any fitness level. There's no pressure—just a supportive community helping you grow at your own pace.
Q: “Is Karate violent?
Karate is all about self-discipline and self-defense—not aggression. At our school, we teach peaceful conflict resolution and the power of restraint. In fact, many students who come to us with anger, anxiety, or stress become more balanced and calm through the structure and values of adult martial arts training.
Q: “Am I too old to start martial arts?"
Absolutely not! We have students in their 30s, 40s, 50s, and beyond. Adult martial arts in Lawrence is about personal progress—not perfection. Whether you want to get in shape, learn something new, or relieve stress, it’s never too late to begin.

Q: “Do teens need to be athletic or in shape to join karate?”
Not at all! Our teen karate classes are designed to meet students where they are—physically and mentally. Teens improve their fitness as they go, and there's no pressure to compete or “keep up.” Whether your teen is athletic or just starting their journey, they’ll learn at their own pace in a supportive environment.
Q: “Is karate violent? Will it make my teen aggressive?"
Definitely not. We teach self-defense, not aggression. Teens learn how to avoid conflict, stay calm under pressure, and respond to difficult situations with confidence and control. In fact, many parents say their teens become more respectful, responsible, and emotionally balanced through karate.
Q: “What are the benefits of martial arts for teens outside the dojo?"
Teens gain more than just physical strength—they build confidence, discipline, and mental focus that translates into better school performance, improved social skills, and greater emotional resilience.
